Overview
One of the hottest young stars in jazz makes his Cal Performances debut. Discovered at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 2006 by Quincy Jones, the Cuban-born artist has since gone on to perform to capacity crowds at the Playboy Jazz Festival at the Hollywood Bowl, the SXSW Music Festival, and Newport Jazz Festival. Possessing an "elegant yet explosive technique and command of an array of musical idioms", (Los Angeles Times), this phenomenal pianist immediately calls up images of such legendary jazz pianists as Keith Jarrett, Thelonious Monk, Art Tatum, Bill Evans, and his compatriot Chucho Valdés. Rodríguez was schooled in the rigorous classical conservatories of Havana, and his riveting artistry is informed as much by Bach and Stravinsky as by his Cuban and jazz roots.
