Founded in Boston in 1815, the Handel and Haydn Society is America's oldest continuously performing arts organization, and has long set the gold standard in the field of early music performance. Making their first Bay Area appearance in 10 years, these esteemed artists bring two stellar programs to Cal Performances. In the first, concertmaster Aisslinn Nosky solos and leads the orchestra in a concert featuring Vivaldi's virtuosic The Four Seasons. Second, these esteemed artists muster their forces in a stirring performance of Handel's Jephtha. The oratorio tells the story of Jephtha, a commander for the Israelites against the Ammonites, and his daughter Iphis, who is betrothed to one of Jephtha's soldiers, Hamor. With a stellar cast, Harry Christophers—one of the finest Handelians in the world—will illuminate this theatrical story of passion and redemption, and showcase the transformative powers of Handel's music.
